Key Stage 4

BTEC in Travel and Tourism

BTECs enhance the performance of A*-C capable learners, who will recognise that the skills they are developing are those that employers will value, and who will be stretched and challenged by the more hands-on vocational approaches to learning and assessment. The assessment approach of the BTEC Firsts in Travel and Tourism allows for learners to receive feedback on their progress throughout the course as they provide evidence towards the grading criteria.

How is the course assessed?

The vocational learning style is completely different from more traditional routes. Learners may research topics and present results in a wide variety of ways other than as written text; often applying their research, skills and knowledge to specific work-related contexts and case studies, with many centres using real-life examples. This has been done in the past through visits and talks at various organisations, such as Alton Towers, The Jorvik Viking Centre, The Dungeons and cities such as London. Where appropriate, group interaction can often play a part; for example, through teamwork and role play learners can work collaboratively on certain key parts of their studies, just as they would in the workplace.

How successful has the course been in the past?

There has been a significant upsurge in the take-up of the BTEC Firsts in Travel and Tourism in schools and colleges over the past 2-3 years. This success has brought achievement to a wide range of learners who have been more motivated to succeed by the applied nature of the BTEC approaches to teaching, learning and assessment. This has been evident in Brumby Engineering College, with a 100% pass rate A*- C being achieved so far in Travel and Tourism.
