Key Stage 4

Course Content

The Year 10 course in Textiles is a mainly hands on course, working in a practical workshop. Students will work as textile designers, designing and making textile products. Firstly they produce a designer’s notebook which contains samples of techniques such as tie dye, batik, appliqué, hand and machine embroidery, quilting and patchwork. This book is used as a resource for further projects.

In Year 10 students work on two main projects:-

Mini project - (Group work) - Designing and making decorative textile products. Project themes may be based on seasons such as winter or summer, animals, insects or festivals such as Christmas

Second Project - Leisure Wear. This project is designed to improve student machine sewing skills. Students make Pyjamas which they decorate with appliqué or embroidery .

During the final half term in Year 10 we start their major project coursework. Students have a choice of three projects - fancy dress costumes, soft furnishings or textile gift products.

The written element of the textiles course is taught through the practical work. Students have practical or written tests to assess ability and progress every half term.
