At KS4 we continue to build on the work covered at KS3 and the students follow the AQA examinations.

The students have the potential to cover one, two or three GCSEs, depending on how they perform during their KS3 SATs. For students to study the three separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) they must achieve a good level 5 or better in their KS3 tests. The courses cover the same units as the GCSE core Science, Additional Science plus one extra unit of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The AQA GCSE core Science is broken into six units, two each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as a unit looking at the skills that Scientists use in their work.

How Science Works: reviewing and extending the skills developed at KS3 and looking at the skills Scientists need in all areas work.

Human Biology: This looks at the following areas: co-ordination and control; healthy eating; drug abuse and controlling infectious disease.

Evolution and environment: Broken up into the following areas: adaptation for survival; variation; evolution; how people affect the planet.

Products from rocks: broken into: rocks and building; rocks and metals; crude oil.

Oils, Earth and atmosphere: broken into: products from oil, plant oils, the changing world.

Energy and energy resources: broken into: heat transfer; using energy; electrical energy; generating energy.

Radiation and the Universe: broken into: electromagnetic waves; radioactivity; the origins of the Universe.

Assessment of the course is carried out by external examination as well as a centre-assessed unit. The students can be entered for examinations at the following times: November; March or June in either year 10 or year 11. The examination comprises of 6 multiple choice objective tests each of 30 minutes and worth 12.5% of the total mark. The centre-assessed work is based on normal class practical work and an investigative skills assignment.

In year 11 the students may continue studying a more academic science course (GCSE Additional Science) or they may opt for a more practical/skills based course (GCSE Additional Applied Science). Guidance will be given to students as to which course is best suited to their ability.

Details of the scheme of work for year 11 will follow shortly.
