First in Sport
What is BTEC Sport?
There are two courses:
• BTEC First Diploma in Sport (Exercise
& Fitness)
• BTEC First Certificate in Sport
Entry Requirements
• A keen interest in sport
• A proven commitment to
extra-curricular involvement
• The ability to work independently & as
part of a team
• The ability to meet deadlines &
produce quality coursework regularly
What can you do at the end of the
course?
• BTEC qualifications are highly valued
by employers & colleges of further
education.
• Using the qualification could lead to
immediate jobs in:
o Outdoor Education Centres
o Sport & Leisure Services
• Or if you decide to go to college,
higher level BTEC or A-Levels can be
pursued.
1. BTEC First Diploma in Sport
(Exercise & Fitness)
• This is the course that the current
Yr10s & 11s are doing.
• It is taught over 5 periods a week &
is mainly theory based with some
practical parts
• There are no exams! It is all assessed
through assignments which are set &
marked by the teacher.
• It is the equivalent of 4 GCSE grades
A* - C.
What is the course structure?
• The course is made up of six units:
• All students study two core units;
o The Body in Sport
o Health, Safety and Injury in Sport
• Students also study four further units
from;
o The Sports Industry
o Preparation for Sport
o Planning and Leading Sports Activities
o Practical Sport
o Practical Outdoor and Adventurous
Activities
o Work-based Project in Sport
o Instructing Exercise and Fitness
o Sport and Leisure Facility Operations.
How is the course assessed?
• Each unit is assessed by assignments &
is marked by the teacher.
• Each unit of work is assessed using:
o Pass (equivalent of 2 Cs & 2 Bs at
GCSE)
o Merit (equivalent of 2 Bs & 2 As at
GCSE)
o Distinction (equivalent of 2 As & 2
A*s at GCSE)
2. BTEC First Certificate in Sport
• This is the course that will be
delivered to Yr10s starting in September
2007.
• It will be taught over 4 periods a
week & is mainly theory based with some
practical parts.
• There are no exams! It is all assessed
through assignments which are set &
marked by the teacher.
• It is the equivalent of 2 GCSE grades
A* - C.
What is the course structure?
• The course is made up of 3 units:
• At least one of the following Core
units must be studied;
o The Body in Sport
o Health, Safety and Injury in Sport
• Enough units must be studied from the
following to make a total of three units
overall;
o The Sports Industry
o Preparation for Sport
o Planning & Leading Sports Activities
o Practical Sport
o Practical Outdoor & Adventurous
