Our History

The school opened on this site in 1928 as the Brumby Senior Boys School. In 1929 girls were admitted to the school for one year, before moving to the newly opened Ashby Girls Secondary Modern School. This has since been demolished. Brumby Boys continued through the wars years and beyond, changing in to Brumby Comprehensive School in 1974, when the schools in the town were re-organised. The school has seen many changes over the years since then, with a number of Head teachers, school logos and even the name of the school being altered. Many thousands of pupils have emerged successfully from its doors and gone on to forge careers, locally and far abroad. In 2002 it became known as Brumby School and three years later, in September 2005, it became Brumby Engineering College, after gaining Specialist status for Engineering from the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. Our Dance Studio, opened in 2003 and the Engineering Centre opened in 2007.

The College currently has 53 teachers and an administrative and support staff team of 48 Towards the end of 2008 a major building programme began under the government’s Building Schools for the Future programme. Over 11 million pounds has been spent on the College to equip it for education in the 21st century. This has equipped the College with facilities which are amongst the finest in the country.

At its most recent OfSTED inspection in November 2008, the Inspectors described us as a “Good, school,”where children are able to make “good progress, The inspectors said that the “Leadership and Management” within the school was “Outstanding.”.

The College enjoys a good local reputation and an historic tradition. Its achievements in Sport and the Expressive Arts are well known locally. Academic standards have risen steadily over the past few years. In 2010, 82% of the students gained 5+ A*-C grades at GCSE, placing our school at 10% above the national average. We were in the top 25% of schools nationally for the value added at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. We recently received an Award at a celebratory dinner at BAFTA in London from the Specialists Schools and Academies Trust for our success in adding value, which was amongst the best in the country.. Previous to this we have been identified as the “Most Improved Specialist Engineering College” in the country when our 5+ A*-C results at GCSE from 2004-2007 rose by over 10 percentage points..

The College has been twinned with a school in Tokyo, Japan since 1996 and with a school in Dalian, China, since 2005, sending and receiving students and teachers between the schools.

We like to take pride in our history and what has been achieved by our students. Yet we are also forward looking. Our students follow an exciting curriculum, designed to ensure that all students can reach their potential.

Brumby Engineering College – a school with a proud history and an exciting future.
