- Dual
Award in Leisure and Tourism
Who’s in the department -
Mrs. K. Simpson
- About the
course
- Leisure and
Tourism often carries the misconstrued image
of a topic with no academic content.
However, although the course involves
subject content about the leisure and
tourism industry, it also covers the subject
areas of marketing (Business Studies) and
customer service.
There are three units in the course content:
Unit 1- 1 ½ hour exam consisting of short
answer questions on investigating Leisure
and Tourism.
Unit 2 – Internal assessment (coursework) on
the Marketing in Leisure and Tourism
Unit 3 - Internal assessment on the
(coursework) Customer service in Leisure and
Tourism
As the award consists of 2/3 coursework it
allows the students to improve on their work
due to the option of assessing and
reassessing their work. This therefore
allows them to attain the best grade
possible for them and cuts out the fear of
total exam pressure.
The course is delivered over four periods in
the week, providing the student with enough
time to cover the course content.
Anticipated exam results this year are
anticipated at 100% A*-G and 83% A*-C. Due
to the fact that this award is dual it will
duplicate the grade received, so anyone
receiving and ‘A’ will receive two ‘A’s.
This assists in the student receiving a
higher number of results and prevents them
from being overloaded with subjects to work
and revise for.
Careers in the Subject
- Customer
service or marketing can be used most places
of work making the employment opportunities
endless.
Trips
- The students
take part in various visits that aid them
with their understanding of the course
content. Due to the memories of the visits
many past students have found them useful
both in their exam and portfolio
understanding.
The visits that occur are,
• Alton Towers
• The Deep
• A tour around London’s tourist
destinations
• Scunthorpe Leisure Centre and Doncaster
Dome
• 20/21 art gallery
• Forest Pines Health and fitness suite.
• Scunthorpe United Football Club
• Sheffield Sports Academy
Extra Activities
The students do get assessed on their
ability to communicate with others which we
do know that some will find daunting.
Therefore, we set up scenarios that make it
more enjoyable but provide them with the
skills necessary for the future. Examples
include running sporting festivals for the
junior schools or providing teaching
sessions for a particular skill. We also
bring in visiting speakers from places such
as North Lindsey
College and the Leisure centre to set up
realistic scenarios that they can take part
in.
