Key Stage 3
Year 7
A skills based course looking at how to structure an
improvisation, basic mime technique, imaginative role play and
working from a stimulus.
Year 8
An in depth look at improving acting skills through role play
followed by examining various dramatic genres or types such as
Ghost stories, science fiction, etc with a focus on what can and
cannot be shown in a drama studio.
Year 9
The first item on the menu is a GCSE taster course allowing the
pupils to make an informed choice at option time. This is
followed by a module looking at monologues and duologues. The
third term is work on a stimulus individually negotiated with
groups or individual pupils.
Key Stage 4
GCSE Drama
This is a highly practical introduction to acting and theatre
skills which also looks at understanding written texts through
the process of acting out or presenting them.
In addition to helping students acquire subject knowledge, this
specification:
Encourages students to explore and actively engage in a wide
range of creative and stimulating activities to develop as
effective and independent learners and as critical and
reflective thinkers with enquiring minds
Develops and demonstrates competence in a range of practical,
creative and performance skills
Encourages students to work imaginatively and creatively in
collaborative contexts, generating, developing and communicating
ideas
This specification is made up of two units
Unit 1 - Drama Written Paper (40%)
A choice of writing about two of the below areas: prepared for
by class teaching and discussion but written during a 1 hour 30
minute examination;
Section A - Practical work completed during the course
Section B - Study and performance of a scripted play
Section C - Study of a live theatre production seen
Unit 2 Practical Work (60%)
Students are required to study at least two assessment options.
They are free to choose any of the options from the following
list under guidance from the teacher:
Devised thematic work
Acting
Improvisation
Theatre in Education
Physical Theatre
Each assessment option will result in a performance polished to
a high standard and suitable for a target audience. It is
expected that students taking this option will attend after
school rehearsals as part of their homework to help them polish
their final pieces.
